Engineering is known as the application of scientific theory in designing, creating and analyzing technological solutions. Today, engineering is considered to have four major basic branches: chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Within these branches fall numerous sub-specialties and hybridization of fields.
Chemical engineering deals with the use of physical sciences, life sciences and mathematics to process raw materials and elements into other forms. Within this branch also fall the production of new materials and technologies, such as molecular engineering. The title given to those who are employed within this branch is generally "process engineer" or "chemical engineer".Chemical Engineering
Electrical engineering is concerned wholly with the manipulation and application of electricity. This type of engineering uses electricity or electronics to conduct energy or to process information. Generally, this field is further distinguished between electrical engineering and electronic engineering. These newly developed fields of engineering often times don't fall in the four other categories of engineering. This is mainly due to the fact that science and research are forever changing and evolving. Some of the new technology produced doesn't fit in the traditional categories and its principles are based on vastly different foundations. Civil Engineering is the branch of engineering focusing on the design, assembly and maintenance of physical environments, either manmade or naturally built. The branch deals with things like buildings and bridges to canals and dams. Mechanical engineering uses the principles of physics & materials science to construct mechanical systems. Within this field, heat and mechanical power are combined to create and operate machinery. It is important that mechanical engineers have a thorough understanding of the principles of physics, especially thermodynamics, as well as a good foundation in mechanics and materials science.Mechanical Engineering
